Average Price: $38,904 | Passenger Capacity: 12 people

There's good news and bad news when it comes to the Larson Escape 21. The good news is that this pontoon comes with a portable toilet and a pop-up cabana for privacy. The bad news is, Larson no longer manufactures boats, so you will not be able to buy a brand-new Escape 21. However, you may have luck finding a gently used boat for sale.

Why We Love Larson Escape 21

The reason that this discontinued boat still gets a mention from us is because of the pop-up cabana. This cabana is a lot more convenient than the privacy tents that most pontoon boats come with. When it's not in use, simply press a button and the cabana will fold down into the floor. This allows you to take full advantage of the available deck space.

Another reason the Larson Escape 21 makes our list is because of the quality of the build. Even used Escape 21 pontoon boats offer superior performance and ease of operation. Can You Set Up A Bathroom On A Pontoon Boat?

Can You Set Up A Bathroom On A Pontoon Boat
Can You Set Up A Bathroom On A Pontoon Boat

Only a select few pontoon boats are built with a bathroom on board. These boats are typically larger than average (such as party boats) or very luxurious. Luckily, there are several types of pontoon boats that provide enough room for a bathroom setup. If the pontoon you're interested in has a privacy station, this area can be turned into a bathroom.

You can still arrange a bathroom setup in a pontoons boat without a privacy station. However, the amount of space you have on board will determine what type of bathroom you can have. If the boat has a bimini top, you will be able to attach a privacy curtain to create a simple setup.

If this isn't an option for you, you're not out of luck. You can still create a bathroom onboard with the use of a pop-up changeroom or privacy shelter. However, it's important that you have enough storage space on the pontoon to store the portable toilet and privacy tent when it's not in use.

How To Build A Bathroom On A Pontoon

You don't have to have any carpentry experience to create a bathroom setup on a pontoon boat. There are a few items you need to get to make this happen. Before you invest in products for your bathroom onboard, we suggest making sure the boat has enough storage space for your equipment when it's not in use.

So, what items do you need to set up a bathroom on a pontoon? Let's take a look.

Portable Toilet

The most important product for your bathroom onboard is a portable toilet. Before you choose a toilet, you must make a plan of where you're going to set up your pontoon bathroom. This way, you'll know which size of toilet you will be able to fit on your boat. There are several different models and sizes to choose from when it comes to portable toilets.

If you're buying a new pontoon boat directly from the dealership, we suggest inquiring about toilets there. Many manufacturers are able to include a portable toilet for an additional cost. If this isn't an option, you're not out of luck. There are many places that sell portable toilets, including Amazon.

Portable toilets are very easy to set up and take down. Most portable toilets on the market will come with a waste tank. When you arrive on shore, you will be able to empty this waste tank directly into a toilet.

Private Area

Before setting up your toilet, you will need a private area. Luckily, it's very easy to set up a private area for your portable toilet. Privacy curtains are a great option for boats with bimini tops, while pop-up changerooms are the best options if you don't have one.

Privacy curtains are the easiest method to work with. If you are able to set up one of these, we recommend it over the pop-up changeroom. This is because it's very easy to put the curtain up in a secluded area of the boat. Even if you buy a curtain that's too big, you will be able to adjust it to the space you have to work with.

Pop-up changerooms are very convenient. These are small tent-like structures that work as a privacy shelter. You simply unfold it to pop the tent up, then fold it up when you want to take it down. We recommend measuring the space you have to work with before buying a tent. Once the tent is unfolded, you can't adjust the size.

Deodorizer

Most portable toilets are designed to control the odor from human waste. However, there is only so much the toilet can do on its own. With the help of a deodorizer, you will be able to prevent the funky smells from the toilet. We recommend using an eco-friendly toilet deodorizer to avoid bringing harsh chemicals on board.

Using a deodorizer is very simple. Before getting your toilet ready, all you need to do is place the recommended amount in the waste tank. This will minimize odors during your boating trip.

Keep in mind, deodorizer doesn't fully remove odors. To keep odors away, make sure you regularly disinfect the waste tank after use and allow it to air out.

Clean Up

Having a portable toilet on board is great, but how are you supposed to clean up after using it? Pop-up changerooms don't have the facilities to add a sink. To clean your hands, we recommend using hand sanitizer or wet wipes. Check the product label for the hand sanitizer you plan to bring. Make sure it contains at least 60% alcohol to efficiently kill bacteria.

Regular toilet paper can't be used with most portable toilets. This is because it blocks the tank, which could result in a foul mess on board. Instead, you should bring marine-grade toilet paper. This is a special type of biodegradable toilet paper that's designed for portable toilet tanks.

If you only have regular toilet paper, do NOT flush it. Instead, bring a small garbage bag or waste bin for the toilet paper and other hygiene items that can't be placed in the toilet.

Toilet Cover

If you have multiple people on board, it's likely that you'll only want to have the pop-up bathroom setup when people need to use it. Taking the toilet down and stowing it away allows for more space on board. Before storing your toilet, it should be placed in a protective cover or bag.

Nobody wants to have a toilet in view when they're enjoying a day on the lake. When you place the toilet in a cover, it's out of sight. The protective cover/bag also makes it easier to carry the toilet on and off the boat.

Do I Need A Bathroom On A Pontoon?

Do I Need A Bathroom On A Pontoon
Do I Need A Bathroom On A Pontoon

Whether or not you need a bathroom on a pontoon is a personal preference. Many boat owners are fine without one. However, if you plan on spending long days on the lake or entertaining guests on your boat, a bathroom is something that you should consider.

Not only does the bathroom give people a place to relieve themselves, but it's also a private area to change. Lakes can often be crowded. If you want to change into your swimsuit or change your child's clothing, you will need privacy. The bathroom is a simple way to achieve that.

We recommend having a bathroom on a pontoon boat because you never know when you will need it. There are many reasons you can benefit from one, but the main one to consider is if someone suddenly gets sick on board. They will appreciate the private area while handling their emergency.

What Should You Know About Bathroom Setup On A Pontoon Before Buying It?

Most pontoons on the market don't include a bathroom area. However, there are certain aspects of a pontoon boat to look for in order to create a bathroom setup that meets your expectations. One of the best features to look for is a bimini. This is a canvas cover that is held up by metal rods.

A bimini is used for weather protection while you're on the boat. If the pontoon you're looking for doesn't include one, it's very likely that the dealership will be able to add one. This feature is excellent for protection from the sun, rain, spray, and wind. It also provides a protective area to set up a bathroom on the pontoons.

The bimini is an excellent feature because typically there is enough space under it to create a bathroom/changeroom area.  This makes it easier to create a private area that doesn't stick out or get in the way. You won't have to worry about the setup getting in the way of your view.

Do All Bennington Pontoons Have Bathrooms?

Not all Bennington pontoons have a bathroom onboard. However, the manufacturer has created space on each pontoon where people can add a bathroom if they want. On top of that, they won't have to search all over the state for the items they need. For an additional fee, Bennington can supply a portable toilet, privacy shade, and other items.

Many Bennington pontoons do come with a privacy cubicle already installed. It's up to the customer if they want to leave this cubicle as is for a dressing room, or add a portable toilet for bathroom usage. Keep in mind, the space is snug with a toilet in the private cubicle. It may be a tight squeeze to use as a changeroom with the toilet.
